Sisal of six to eight millimetres lasts longest on large cat trees, and the reason is the fibre count per claw stroke. Loose strand ends, a cat can pull, mark the first true decline, and want trimming before they become handles. Gaps exposing bare posts mean tension has gone, and cats abandon posts at this stage because their claws no longer catch properly. Rewrapping a sound frame with heavy-gauge rope takes one evening and restores full service for years. Posts at the base of the tree wear fastest, since most cats stretch and scratch at the lowest column immediately after waking.
